Friday, August 5, 2016, the Mid-Hudson School Study Council hosted their 61st Annual School Law Conference on the campus of Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh.  The 160 attendees representing school administrators, board members, superintendents, college and university representatives and school personnel, were provided an opportunity to learn information on a variety of topics.  This year’s general session focused on the timely topic of “Transgender Students & Staff in Our Schools”, while breakout sessions addressed “Civil Service Hiring, Supervision, Evaluation & Discipline”, “Investigations & Student Rights Relative to Social Media”, “Education Law 3020-a & the APPR”, and “ESL-ENL-DASA & Special Education: School Climate, Culture & Implications”.  The concluding general session, presented by Jay Worona, General Counsel & Deputy Executive Director of the New York State School Boards Association entitled: “Recent Decisions of the Commissioner and the Courts”, provided a review of legislative action over the past year and the implication for schools.

The Executive Committee of the MHSSC and our member districts thank our legal partners and all of the presenters for their expertise and willingness to participate in this valuable conference.  Mark your calendars for next year’s 62nd Annual School Law Conference scheduled for Friday, August 4, 2017, and as always suggestions for future topics are welcome.
